Spooky Ideas for Halloween
Halloween is fast approaching, and here at The Totem Pole, Room on the Broom by The Gruffalo author Julia Donaldson is a huge favourite. We are stocking Room on the Broom in sturdy board book format here in our marketplace as well as all the animals who share the Witch's broomstick and some wonderful cast iron cauldrons. With the book read aloud with some props and see the number of ways the children might extend it into other areas. These are some possible ideas for extension activities... Map MakingThe Witch and her friends travel over a variety of terrains, perhaps some children would like to make a map, some may want to "create" a map out of natural resources found outside inside a tough spot so they have a 3D map of the terrain over which they fly! An Outdoor HuntCan we pick up all the animals and give them a ride on the broom? The Witch tapped her broomstick and whoosh! they were gone! Construction and Problem SolvingCan we make a broom out of things we find outside. All the animals in the story bring things to add to the cauldron to make the magical broom which seats everyone. Maybe we can work as small groups to make something together. Messy Play/CraftTo save their friend the witch, the animals rise from the muddy ditch looking like a strange and scary creature, maybe make a swamp in a tough spot or water area and have some other resources available for children to choose to make their "monster". All these products as well as more Autumnal and Halloween inspired resources are available now in The Totem Pole Market Place. For further information please contact Marie on 01476 578200. |
