Take 5 Things.... Using Lycra
Engaging the children with you in exploring Lycra gives the opportunity to play creatively and have lots of fun.

- A sheet of lycra
- Balloons
- Collection of ‘monkeys’
- Collection of ‘teddies’
- Collection of ‘leaves’
- Remember that Lycra is an open ended product
- Don’t think about the outcome of the play just observe what the children do as they join you.
- Their actions will lead to your next steps.
- Watch for the children’s leads as you invite them to gather around the Lycra.
Standing or sitting around the Lycra, hold on! Together start to pull, push, lower, higher, go in, out, up and down......
Introduce blown up balloons, counting 1 – 2 – 3, as you place them on the Lycra. Perhaps it is someone’s birthday? Start to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ - encourage the children to bounce the balloons on the Lycra. Can they go high and float back down to be caught
by the Lycra? Do they stay on the Lycra?
Laying your ‘monkey collection’ on the Lycra very softly start to sing ‘Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed’ ........ Let the children lead the next steps. Can you think of any oth

er stories or songs about monkeys? In need of more monkeys - have a look at our Monkey Singing Sack.
Asking the children to lay the ‘teddy bear’ collection on the Lycra, introduce the story and song ‘Ten in a Bed’. Share with the children and ask for their thoughts and ideas. Need some more ideas - have a look at our Ten in the Bed Book Pack.
Collect leaves as the Autumn days arrive – Make up your own songs as you bounce the leaves on the Lycra....
See the leaves are tumbling down Tumbling down, tumbling down, See the leaves are tumbling down It must be Autumn .....
Could you make up another verse?
